We often joke about needing a “holiday from the holidays.”
Between the shopping, the travel, and the family obligations, December is objectively the most stressful month of the year. But have you ever noticed that your exhaustion in December feels different?
It’s not just being tired. It’s a deep, cellular drain. Your libido might disappear. Your sleep becomes fragmented. You might feel irritable or anxious in a way that feels out of character.
Most people write this off as “just stress.” But as a Naturopathic Doctor, I see it as a very specific biological trade-off your body is making.
We call it the Cortisol Steal.
Survival vs. Vitality: The Biological Choice
To understand why you feel drained, you have to understand how your body prioritizes hormones.
Your body has two main “modes”:
-
Vitality & Reproduction: This is where you make Testosterone, Progesterone, and Estrogen. This mode supports energy, muscle growth, libido, and mood stability.
-
Survival: This is where you make Cortisol (the stress hormone). This mode is designed to get you through immediate danger.
Here is the problem: Your body cannot be in both modes at 100% capacity at the same time.
When you are chronically stressed—like during a frantic holiday season—your brain signals your adrenal glands to pump out Cortisol to handle the “threat.” To do this efficiently, it suppresses the production of your “luxury” hormones (Testosterone and Progesterone).
In simple terms: Your body is stealing resources from your vitality to pay for your stress.
What This Looks Like for Men (Low T)
If you are a man already on the borderline of Low Testosterone, the holidays can push you over the edge. High cortisol directly inhibits testosterone production. You might notice:
-
Sudden loss of motivation or “drive.”
-
increased belly fat (cortisol specifically stores fat in the visceral area).
-
A complete lack of libido, exactly when you want to be connecting with your partner.
What This Looks Like for Women (Perimenopause)
For women, the “Cortisol Steal” often hits Progesterone hardest. Progesterone is your “calming” hormone. When stress steals it, you are left with:
-
Insomnia (waking up at 3 AM with a racing mind).
-
Increased anxiety or irritability.
-
Heavier or more painful cycles.
-
Hot flashes that seem to get worse when you are busy.
The Solution: You Can’t “Relax” Your Way Out of It
While meditation and breathing are great, they often aren’t enough to correct a true hormonal deficit. If your tank is empty, you can’t just wish it full.
We need to see what we are working with.
This is why I advocate for comprehensive lab testing—not just for your sex hormones, but for your cortisol and adrenal function as well. We need to see if your fatigue is just a lack of sleep, or if your body has shifted into “Survival Mode” and stuck there.
